As coal still burns under Centralia, trash piles up above:

It is interesting to get a perspective on Centralia as written by outsiders.. In this case of the linked article, it from the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER..

One portion of the the article I most as follows:

“Centralia’s streets also make it easy to drive in, dump trash and bigger items, and take off. Hughes said he first noticed the dumping about 20 years ago, and it has only gotten worse as more houses have been built in the surrounding areas. Contractors often discard building materials; people who don’t want to pay fees to trash tires, refrigerators and televisions come into Centralia at night and toss them from trucks.”

The story goes on to highlight recent efforts to actually keep the town that was cleaner than it was before..

There may be no zip code, but offenders of pollution and dumping laws are having a field day decimating the former streets and side roads of Centralia, Pennsylvania.. As an observer to what happens in the town, there is endless graffiti on places that go well beyond Graffiti Highway. Along with that piles of endless trash throughout..

The groups involved cleaning it are doing amazing work..
