The article doesn’t go into much depth about the reasoning .. But I agree with the concept. The longer we survive the most likely we will stick around longer.

UNLESS the big asteroid strikes..the solar flare hits.. the EMP attack sets up back 1000 years.. Or an alien invasion occurs and our weapons are no match.
That may change the dynamics a bit..
