So we don’t quite know what the new Masters of the Universe trailer will be…but we do know it’s coming tomorrow. Why? Because in one of the more modern marketing twists I’m still getting used to, we now have a trailer announcing the trailer.
There was a lot of buzz that a full trailer might drop during the Super Bowl. Apparently He-Man doesn’t rate that high. But to fans? He-Man still rates higher than any Super Bowl championship team ever assembled. Eternia doesn’t need halftime.
The trailer-for-the-trailer leans hard into nostalgia. We see the old television. We hear the original Masters of the Universe theme song. There are jokes about junk food being a healthy breakfast…very 1980s. It’s clearly designed to hook the dads who once begged for He-Man figures and glue them back to the screen long enough to convince their own kids to come along for the ride.
Nostalgia works. Whether this is the right nostalgia is the bigger question. Maybe ‘90s nostalgia is more in vogue right now than pure ‘80s…but coming off the continued popularity of Stranger Things, the ‘80s still rule. Synths, bikes, monsters, and muscle-bound heroes aren’t going anywhere just yet.
What’s also interesting is the cast they’ve assembled for this new take. Nicholas Galitzine steps into the role of Prince Adam / He-Man, bringing a more modern leading-man energy to the character. Camila Mendes takes on Teela, Idris Elba is Duncan / Man-At-Arms, and Jared Leto is set to play Skeletor…a casting choice that will definitely get people talking, for better or worse. It’s a mix of current stars and big personalities, which suggests this isn’t just a nostalgia play but an attempt to make Eternia feel relevant again.
So now we wait.
Let’s see what this He-Man: Masters of the Universe trailer actually has to offer. Let’s watch the trailer for the trailer…and enjoy the images as they fly through the air of Eternia.
