THIS MAY OR MAY NOT HAPPEN AROUND March 13 .. The IDES are ready. But we may glide by with warmth..
If this map – the ECMWF run – pans out the Eastern United States will be facing a major blizzard with 1 to 2 feet of snow in locations where dark blue and yellows and reds exist.
The only fly in the ointment for snow lovers: Other models are calling for sunny and warm temperatures around this same time..
My favorite weather boy on Facebook WEATHERBOY WEATHER writes this,
That’s a big “IF” –no other model agrees with such a blizzard scenario. Another major forecast model, the American GFS, suggests a storm will form around this time, but head up into the Great Lakes, bringing a relatively mild rain with it up the coastal plain of the northeastern United States. Other models, such as the Canadian GEM don’t even indicate a storm system those days.
And the latest European output isn’t aligned to prior output; yesterday afternoon’s run indicated a northeast snowstorm threat, but kept most snow well north/west of the I-95 corridor in the northeast.
Until there’s better run-to-run consistency with the European model and some better alignment with other global forecast models, the idea of a northeast blizzard should be discounted for now.
One more thing to keep in mind. It was 80 degrees a week ago.
This has been the winter that never started. Cold and boring days have abounded, but there has been no significant snowstorm to remember. Until….maybe March 13?
One last fun thing to remember.. Back in 1993 when things were warm and March was calm, something happened. The 1993 Storm of the Century, also known as the ‘93 Super Storm, the Great Blizzard of 1993, or the No Name Storm, was a large cyclonic storm that formed over the Gulf of Mexico on March 12, 1993. The storm eventually dissipated in the North Atlantic Ocean on March 15, 1993.
……The dates for this 2017 occurrence seem to be strikingly similar..
Time will tell.
For now I am slightly hoping for the big one.. And yet somehow resigned to the false hope of the winter of 2016/17 never panning out.
