The deadly and memorable A-hole in Guntown

For those out of the area, a definition of the A-HOLE in question.. It is a popular swimming and partying spot for generations.

It includes a cliff called “the big red”, a beach, and a diving rock Legend has it that on a good day, you can see the junkyard at the bottom.. On a bad day you will recall the tragic situations of the past..

A few days ago it took yet another life..

Robert Chuplis, 40, of Girardville, died this past week ..

Girardville Fire personnel and the West End Dive Team from Mahanoy City were called to the “A Hole” in Butler Township just east of Girardville for a water rescue. Chuplis never surfaced.. May he rest in eternal peace.. it is yet another tragic moment in the area..

This is not the first time that the Girardville A-HOLE has been  in news… A stroll through amnesia lane..

July 9, 1997, the Pottsville REPUBLICAN veered into the paranormal with tales of UFO sightings near the A-hole.

Back in 1998, former commissioner at the time Forrest Shadle said that the A-Hole was a tourism magnet ..

Shadle said, “It was beautiful.”

Back on July 27, 1976, the site was the scene of some excitement.. The a-hole  was the scene of an orange car and “green box” becoming submerged into the water.. The Pottsville REPUBLICAN at the time said that the a-hole was the site of ‘booze parties’ every night..

By 1998, the site had not lost its popularity.. But also its tragedy.. .On July 18, 1998, the REPUBLICAN reported the death of 22-year-old Daniel Boylan..

Only days later, an opinion appeared in the ‘thunder en-lightening’ section of the October 19, 1998 edition of the REPUBLICAN HERALD:

On February 22, 1991, the Herald reported about a death that propelled the a-hole to media prominence.. it also talked about a 12-year-old Gerald Pozza and an 80-year-old woman succumbing to the a-hole..

The trail of tears leading to only days ago may have begun with death, as well..

On May 7, 1936 we learned this about James Kerwin–rumored to be the first death in the a-hole back long before the second World War..
