Coal Speaker has reported about our collective sleepless night amid the Covid-19 pandemic here and on our social media pages..
There have been anecdotal stories from around the nation.. even on my personal Facebook, when asked of friends if they were having bad dreams, the comments flooded in.. It was a collective YES ..
TRAUMA MOMMA
Mass trauma had appeared to grip the nation once lockdowns started in mid-March.. Even as the weeks slide now into months of further lockdowns, it appears people’s nightmares and dreamscapes continue ..
Now a study is attempting to document the pandemic exhaustion that our nation is facing: Commissioned by SleepStandards, the survey encompassed Americans of various ages (18-65) and consisted of 56% women and 43% men..
The results are not surprising but equally compelling: People are having trouble sleeping, waking several times a night, or just can’t sleep at all.
46% said that avoiding the news has helped them sleep better. 40%read before bed.. 27% use sleep supplements .. 21% practice meditation or yoga, and finally 16% have sex..
When respondents were asked why exactly the coronavirus is keeping them up at night, anxiety was the top response (48%). The second most frequent answer was worrying about the safety of loved ones (26%), followed by loneliness (23%) and a generally inconsistent sleeping schedule (23%).
LESS SLEEP.
MORE TIME.
58% are sleeping at least one hour less than before the coronavirus emerged. Meanwhile, 22% haven’t seen their average sleep duration change all that much, and 19% are actually sleeping more.
When asked what they would do if a national lockdown was mandated: 37% said NETFLIX binge it up! 32% said exercise more (32%), followed by 20% saying they’d play more video games …
And though sleep seems to be escaping a nation, only 11% said they would use that quarantine time to catch up on sleep.
And we have all been doing the opposite..
