Shake rattle and roll in South Carolina

Some strange things are afoot down south.. The Coal Speaker has family in South Carolina, and oddities in the form of earthquakes have been abounding for months.. The latest information is even more peculiar: As of this posting, there have been 15 earthquakes in South Carolina in just the last seven days..

There were three earthquakes just today. The shaking was reported by USGS, all in the Elgin area of South Carolina.

The first, a magnitude 2.3 event, struck at a depth of 3.1 km at 12:23 am shortly after midnight; it was located 6 km east of Elgin. The second, a magnitude 2.0 event, struck at a depth of 3.1 km at 5:22 am; the epicenter was 7 km east-southeast of Elgin. . The third struck 7 km south-southwest of Lugoff at a depth of 2.6 km at 10:15 am; it was rated by USGS as a 2.2 magnitude event.

Dozens of  earthquakes within this  swarm have struck South Carolina over the last 7 months.  Most have been around Elgin, which lies within the Carolina Sandhills region of the Atlantic Coastal Plain province; this region is characterized by many dunes of wind-blown sand that were active during the last ice age  but the dunes are currently stabilized by vegetation under modern climate conditions.

The strongest quake was a 3.6 on Wednesday..

Elgin is a small down, about 1,500 strong as of the 2019 numbers. The median age is a little younger than South Carolina overall.. The household income is a little higher as well.

There has been speculation that the quakes seem to be focused around a small body of water in the area..

Researchers have tracked 44 low-magnitude earthquakes since December 2021 in the Elgin and Lugoff areas of South Carolina.

Elgin plans a town meeting at a future date to discuss the activity..

They posted this:

“We are in the process of putting together a town hall meeting for our residents and business owners to have an opportunity to discuss the recent earthquakes that our community has been experiencing.

Once we have decided on a date and time, we will notify the public. We are coordinating this event with county and state officials. The meeting will take place in the Multipurpose Room at Blaney Elementary School.”
