In Defense of the Philadelphia Phillies Karen

Here we go again another Karen. Another day, another video that goes viral.
This time Philly..

At a Phillies game in Philadelphia against the Marlins, a ‘Karen’ Phillies fan goes viral for berating a man for grabbing a home run ball and giving it to his son. The man, who was clearly startled, eventually gave up the ball to the woman. Staff at the game took note of the incident and gave the boy a goodie bag. It also appears that the boy got a signed bat from Harrison Bader after the game.

Cheryl Richardson-Wagner has been identified as the woman involved in the incident .. she is now defending herself..

The clip spread like wildfire across social media, instantly earning her the nickname “Phillies Karen.” Fans online were quick to express outrage, many demanding she be identified and held accountable. The Phillies themselves tried to make things right by later giving the boy a signed baseball and a gift bag, but the damage was done—she became the target of internet ridicule, memes, and furious commentary. What might have once been a minor, forgettable incident inside a stadium instead became a global viral moment.

People actively hunted her down. They smelled online blood and wanted more to be shed…

Back in 2013, we wrote about what seemed shocking.. a woman who was videotaped dancing on the street and the world watched and shared the footage. We wrote then: Fast forward to the year 2013, and it’s now the world’s newest game: Shame innocent people for acting themselves in public. The camera is always watching..

Since then we have been going off the rails of privacy in epic ways..

In 2023 Mashable was among those asking when it became normal to film people in public.. We are so far beyond even that time frame..

In 1984, George Orwell described the “Two Minutes Hate,” a daily ritual where citizens were required to unleash their anger at a designated enemy of the state. The moment in the book was less about the target itself and more about binding the crowd through shared outrage. When you watch how online mobs operate today, especially in viral incidents like the Phillies Karen, the comparison feels chillingly accurate. What Orwell imagined as dystopian propaganda has, in our era of smartphones and instant sharing, become an organic ritual: strangers piling on with fury, driven less by facts and more by the rush of public shaming.

So that’s what we’re living in the 2 minutes of hate, has become reality. Black Mirror it’s not just the TV show, but the world that we live in in the back. Black Mirror reality is following us. All all the time cameras are omnipresent, information, it’s quick. What would have been a story that just made news in a town A decade ago now makes global headlines.

The impact on us is a society. It’s probably slim. There’s no marginal need to worry about these things. And there’s no necessary the problem that needs to be addressed as a matter of fact, addressing the problem seemingly has created a bigger societal ill.

So let me defend the Karen at least in one aspect… Listen, you saw the video. We’re really not going to defend her actions. Although we weren’t there, we were just bystanders on TV and the internet looking at it from afar, but I will defend this is punishment for one moment of a bad choice necessary.

No crime was committed. This kid now has met people from the Philadelphia Phillies and has received a gift bag from the team because of the global phenomenon over this viral incident. He still looks a bit stunned as a child. And let’s not forget he’s a child. He’s being thrust into a viral moment against his will.

People with common lives into a limelight that even Hollywood stars have pressure been within, and then when that person doesn’t act or do what we expect them to do as a society, we attack. We docks, we find addresses, we get them fired. They quit their jobs, they go into hiding. Heck, they probably change their names sometimes too..

Black Mirror is now real. Two minutes of hate has become 20 seconds of hate *and scroll*… However, is if you’re involved with the hate and you’re on the side that’s slinging it, it can sling back quick .. because a camera most likely will be following you too.
