The George Floyd protests continue throughout America.. But Philadelphia has experienced something seemingly unique to the city of brotherly love: Exploding ATM machines and rumors of more nefarious, stranger things.
#Phillyexplosions began trending in the region two days ago.. City residents tonight on Twitter seem too tired to even track the number of explosions resounding through the metro area..
Too exhausted to track tonight. 😴😴😴😴 #phillyexplosions

Initially, a few were wondering what the loud booms were.. explosions or military operations.
Law enforcement then commented on what the loud booms were.
People who have spoken to CoalSpeaker are frantic in their words.. They can’t sleep! Booms and shaking all night..
Looters have used explosives to try and break into dozens of ATMs in Philadelphia since Saturday, the city’s police commissioner said during a press conference Wednesday — and at least one man has been arrested for allegedly selling homemade dynamite.
“In addition to the looting and vandalism, there has been a marked increase in attempts to forcibly enter ATM machines,” Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. “These attempts have included the extremely reckless and dangerous use of explosive materials.”
She said police have responded to at least 135 “explosive events” overall in the last few days, including about 50 ATMs that were damaged or opened as the result of blasts.
Tonight, days after those initial reports, the loud booms continue.. It’s unclear just how many of these booms are directly related to exploding ATM machines vs other potential sources of noise.
One Twitter use posted three separate messages within minutes documenting a series of explosions:
Two booms #phillyexplosions

Another Twitter user uploaded an example of the constant faint explosion noises occurring throughout the city.

While some on Twitter are callous about the issue or trying to find a bit of gallows humor, police are warning city residents about their safety.
Police are alerting the public about a concerning theft in the Frankford section of the city.
Thieves got a hold of 19 large acetylene and oxygen gas canisters.
At press time, it would appear some of the loudest booms have occurred in Northeast Philly near Cottman Ave..
16th and Dauphin..
Even people in Jersey are hearing their neighbors at night..
This Tweet documents that:
I can verify hearing #phillyexplosions since May 30, every night. I'm in Jersey, near Camden, . Either its fireworks/M80s or something else. I don't think its fireworks… After 11 pm or so, I can hear it clearly, and its on a regular basis, which is quite strange.

There are some that still say something more sinister than exploding ATMs are happening.. Rumors online of the National Guard performing activities.. covert military operations.. underground booms..
One persistent rumor among many in the city: The government is performing a psychological warfare on the citizens of Philadelphia. Some are posting photos on social media of military vehicles they say are capable of producing sonic booms similar to those being heard.
No matter what it is… The Liberty Bell is rockin on a Friday night in the free world.
And while many cities have canceled Independence Day due to Covid-19, it appears not only explosions are hitting Philly but also fireworks shows:
@PhiladelphiaGov @PhillyPolice @GovernorTomWolf can someone pls explain this? Why didn’t y’all tell us there was a free fireworks show? #philly #phillyexplosions pic.twitter.com/8qD9zkaS8d
